Shakespeare Global Project

Shakespeare Global Project

On Sunday, 26 April 2020 Professor James Raven, Chair of the ESU, and representatives from International ESUs around the world came together via zoom for a live reading of Shakespeare’s Sonnet 26. Three people from the ESU, St Petersburg Tatiana Ivanova and Yulia Sergaeva, ssociate professors of the Herzen State Pedagogical University, and me Lidia Tcyganova, an English teacher, were lucky to participate in this virtual  union of people devoted to international cooperation, culture, education and Shakespeare of course. Among other participants there were ESU members from England, France, Malta, Pakistan, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, Scotland and Wales. Crossing several time zones we read Sonnet 26 line by line in one go, everyone reading the assigned lines and circling the globe - the experience you will never forget!

I am the Foreign Languages Head in School 67 in St Petersburg where Spanish and English are taught. April 23 is a special day for our school as we remember the two greatest writers of all times Shakespeare and Cervantes on the International Book Day.                   When I learnt about Professor James Raven’s idea of line by line reading of one of Shakespeare’s sonnets, I immediately understood that we could do the likewise activity in our school and we did it! As it was April 23 we read Sonnet 23 by William Shakespeare in English and lines from “Don Quixote” by Miguel Cervantes in Spanish celebrating World Book Day. The school event united 16-year-old lovers of literature and became a memorable day for all participated.

That happened thanks to Professor  Raven’s great idea.
